Necessary Upgrade(10.10.2009)
This is my second Mossberg, I used the factory aluminum safety on the first. While it was a definite upgrade from plastic, this one blows it away. It makes the safety much more crisp, and doesn't tear up your finger. If you have a 500, get this safety, it is very user friendly!
i would buy this product again and again(02.11.2009)
this product is an excellent upgrade from the thumb tearing, sticking, pain in the thumb mossburg factory one...it takes only about 5 minutes to fit & you are ready to rock & roll with your mossy 500....brownells has done it again well done guys....i would recommend this product to all mossy 500 owners....
Great product(04.11.2009)
Just took about 5 minuets to put on my Mossy 930 spx. Very nice upgrade from the plastic safety. Feels sturdy and gives a more positive feel. The grooves fit the thumb instead of sliding over or off of it like the plastic safety. Mossberg should make this a standard on all their shotguns. This is one of the best upgrades you can do.
Outstanding product(10.11.2009)
Installed on my shotgun today. Installation was straight forward. Instructions well written. A piece of advice, Mossberg uses a one way screw to install the safety, and you almost have to break the plastic factory safety lever off. Watch the small bearing when you remove the factory safety.
Great - but not a drop in installation(02.12.2009)
Great product, just be aware that if you are a home gunsmith you have to fully disassemble the bolt from the receiver to install which can be a real project if you are not familiar with the disassembly and re assembly. Also on the newer 500 and 930, Mossberg has installed the factory safety with a one way screw that you cannot remove with normal tools. I gave up and returned it.
Must do upgrade(30.01.2010)
Only took 5 mintues to install. Had to tap out the factory screw as it's installed with a one way but it was easy using a thin flatblade to tap it out. Pull out trigger group by removing the one pin and the safety block was easy to hold with one hand and install the new safety with the other
Big Improvement(05.03.2010)
Although it seems a little pricey for a simple safety switch, this is a great replacement for the factory "flat" switch that Mossberg uses. It allows the shooter to easily operate the safety by feel, as well as sight. One other plus...a common socket-head screw with a hex head can be used to replace that weird one-way-only screw that the factory uses. One drop of medium thread-locker and it's good to go. Overall, a nice improvement to the shotgun.
best [$] i ever spent!(15.07.2010)
just installed on my mossy 930 autoloader. make sure action is locked back. mask reciever with blue painters tape. i also taped down the stock safety button while i removed the screw so the spring and ball wouldn't fly out. i used a good quality sharp scwerdriver and bear down. i also did NOT remove the trigger assembly. install should take 10-15 minutes.
Good once you get it in(02.09.2010)
This safety is a decent product once you get it installed.
Installing it is a bit of a pain due to the one-way screw that is standard on the 500. Just be patient and don't strip the screw. Once you get it off it's a breeze. Just hold the screw, inside the reciever, in place and replace the safety. Make sure you don't lose the ballbearing or you'll have a stressful day. Also, take out all the internal pieces that are not securely in place. It'll just create less aggrivation.
Once it's installed it's not a whole lot bigger than the factory safety. It's just big enough to make a difference. You'll be glad you have it.
Removing/Replacing the Safety Button(08.11.2010)
I read 'comments' before starting to remove/replace. After reading the instructions from Brownell's, I was a bit confused because a couple buyers had simply removed the screw carefully and installed the new button. I strongly disagree with disassembling the trigger, etc. Just be careful with the screw and spring-loaded ballbearing. What a great upgrade!
Buy this part(20.12.2010)
The safety button is a vast imptovement over the stock Mossberg button. It clicks firmly "on" and "off" and your thumb won't slip as is the case with the stock plastic button.
Great product! and fast to install(25.12.2010)
My trainer at a local shooting academy told me he hadn't seen anyone get through their 2 day advanced defensive shotgun course without breaking the standard plastic safety button on my Mossberg 590. I decided to correct in advance. This product gives lots of leverage, is easier to find with your thumb by touch and I am confident it won't break when I need it most. I was able to install without action disassembly! I covered the stock button with masking tape to keep the ball from escaping, tapped the one way screw loose. Needed to have safety forward to put preasure on screw. After it started loosening, moved button to back position. After screw was out, gently removed original button. Had action slide all the way back. With that positioning was able to keep safety block in place and could reinstall button and screw without removing other parts! Did transfer detent plate and the detent ball rolled out during first reassembly attempt. Repositioned and got it done. 15 minutes!
Mossberg 500 safety(08.01.2011)
I installed it on a 930 SPX. Well made, easy to install, great function.
Rugged and simple(20.01.2011)
Excellent instructions, well illustrated and accurate. The part is rugged and won't break like the plastic OEM safety. The high profile makes it easy to find and operate, and the reversible feature would be useful for people with small hands. This went on a personal defense gun,(early long-mag 500 that predates the 590 designation) and appears perfectly suited to it. The greater projection and aggressive serrations that make it easy to operate also make it easier to knock the gun off safe by snagging or bumping it on clothing or other equipment, same as most oversize safeties, so I'd think twice before putting it on a hunting gun.
Great replacement(05.02.2011)
I have an older model of the 500 so I have a normal screw. Came apart in a snap and put new safetey button right on. Bing Bang done and works like a champ. This new one was very close to the one that was on the gun so it doesn't feel that much different using it.
Great upgrade(02.03.2011)
I would have given this item a 5 star rating if it had come included with a replacement screw for the safety button but Brownell's does carry a complete kit which includes the replacement screw and all components to replace the safety button. I found the install to be extremely easy to complete. While it is possible to install this new safety button without stripping the unit down I went ahead and broke it down since I needed to clean the bolt and inside of the receiver anyway. That being said I definitely like the aggressive profile of this button allowing it to be manipulated easily with gloves on but it can be a little tough on the fingers if using without gloves since the serrations in the button are extremely pronounced . Additionally this button can be installed two different ways just in case you have short fingers or are otherwise unable to easily reach the button to engage it. I personally feel that this should be standard equipment on new Mossbergs. Great product.
Great product!(20.09.2012)
This is a great addition to my Mossberg 500. It was easy to fit and works like a charm!
PERFECT!!!(17.12.2012)
I bought this enhanced safety for our Mossberg 590A1 because my wife has no knuckle in her thumbs thus making manipulating the stock safety on the shotgun almost impossible... With this new safety, she can manipulate the safety with ease and is therefore more comfortable with using it should the need arise.
Ordering my 2nd one(02.05.2013)
I ordered one of these for my son's Mossberg 500. I liked it so well I'm ordering a second one for my gun.
Easy to install
Much easier to use than factory safety
works great(30.08.2013)
another great product from brownells. fast shipment. easy to install. rack slide back, leave back. use small flat tip screw driver and hammer to loosen screw, because it's a non-reverseable screw. hold down safety, remove screw, lift safety up,, don't loose ball bearing. make sure it's on spring and put new safety on, install screw and your done. the reason you want to leave slide in all the way back position is so the piece that has the threads for safety screw won't fall into receiver area. if that happens then you have to disassemble shotgun. i'm no gunsmith and took me 5 min. enjoy.
Great safety!(04.11.2013)
Big upgrade over the original plastic safety on my Mossberg Flex 500. Much easier to actuate, no more thumb slipping and fumbling, and looks like it came on it from the factory. Just do it, totally worth it!
Perfect Fitment so much easier!!!(06.11.2013)
Very easy installation on my mossberg 500. Took all of about 5 minutes to screw the old safety switch off and he new BROWNELS enhanced safety switch back on. REMEMBER to keep your factory safety plate under the OEM switch make sure it lightly oiled as well. No need to take entire gun apart. Very, very easy installation process. Oh and 2 day shipping! Cant beat that!
Excellent upgrade from stock 590 safety(26.01.2014)
+1 For all those reviewers who said this wan an easy install. I always wanted to upgrade the plastic safety tab on my Mossberg 590. Bring the bolt all the way to the rear to prevent having to go into the receiver and fish out parts.
If you use just enough pressure to keep a slotted screwdriver from slipping, you can remove & reuse the safety screw with little effort and no dremel. I was careful to back the safety screw off the last few threads so as not to lose the spring and ball detent under the safety. The enhanced safety is fully reversible. 5 star product. I wish I had change it out years ago!
Much, Much Better!(11.03.2014)
I own several shotguns including 2 Mossy 500 series. I recently purchased a 590SP Flex Tactical and it came with a plastic, low-profile safety...pretty awful. Wearing gloves doesn't lend itself well to operating the stock safety. This new safety is very easy to access, gloves or no gloves.
Good enhancement over factory safety(02.08.2014)
I purchased this to improve my ability to manipulate the safety in unconventional manners, as well to improve operation when using a pistol grip on my shotgun. Due a the pistol grip, it can be less natural, and not nearly as sure, to manipulate the safety on top of the receiver. Thanks to this having a raised tab, I am more able to manipulate the safety with strong or weak hand. I reused the existing mounting screw, spring, ball, and plate, and using instructions found on Youtube, did not have to disassemble my shotgun. Tell you what though, don't drop that ball into the receiver. Installation was a breeze, and I am very pleased with the product itself. If you prefer, you can fully disassemble your shotgun and install using the excellent installation instructions included with the component. Buy this now.
Easy install - works great(31.05.2015)
I've installed two of these with no issues. I'm not sure why some try to avoid dismantling the shotgun to install, as this is straight-forward and it's a great time to give the firearm a thorough cleaning.
The screw: It's a standard 6-32 thread, so you can replace it with something you can usually find at the local hardware store. I used button head cap screws (aka Allen screws with rounded heads). I had to trim to the proper length - and since the heads were slightly too large in diameter, I chucked them up in a pistol drill and filed them down to fit. A little Oxpho Blue to darken them up - and now they look like they belong there. If I have to remove them for any reason, I can do so easily without having to deal with the Mossberg one-way screw.
bang for your buck(03.12.2015)
I'll start by saying Brownells was amazing ! I was supposed to get the package on the 5th and I got it 2 days early! Awesome. Now for the actual part. It was a easy to install and works great. It's the little things that matter and this little safety button makes a big difference from function to looks . I highly recommend this part and Brownells to anyone
Great upgrade to my shotgun(14.03.2018)
Just purchased my first shotgun a few months ago. I bought this from Brownell's with excellent customer service.
This safety button is a huge upgrade from the factory safety and well worth the money; it's a safety after all, and 20 bucks is well worth increasing your chances of not having an accident.
It's all metal and feels great, and the raised ridge makes it super easy to manipulate. Much less likely to slip when operating in high stress situations, unlike the factory safety. Also note that you can install the safety either way, with the raised edge closer to your thumb or further away.
OK, but the Vang Comp safety is better.(10.04.2018)
I've installed two of these, and they definitely make it easier to work the safety, especially with wet or sweaty hands. However, I was always disappointed by the sharp edges, which are difficult to completely remove. I've since discarded these in favor of the Vang Comp oversize safety (also available from Brownell's) and am much happier now. My advice is to spend the extra $10 for the Vang part, and not mess with this one.

I've since discarded these in favor of the Vang Comp oversize safety (also available from Brownell's) and am much happier now. My advice is to spend the extra $10 for the Vang part, and not mess with this one.
