Fast and easy(11.08.2010)
This is my first auto powder dispenser so I have no actual experience for comparison. What I found with the hornady unit is fast to set up,easy to use, very simple to make changes and clean. The hopper holds well over a pound of powder so loading in volumn is a matter of pushing buttons and go to it.Comparing the occasional charge to my balance beam showed the charges to be right on. There is no storage memory for charges but changing from 45gr. to 25gr. is an easy matter of clearing then inputting new selection. I found on slow speed it would throw a 45gr. charge in about 30 seconds with only a few over charges per batch of 50.Warnings of overcharge are both audible and visual and the unit will lock up when it detects an overage so you have to clear it before continueing.Over charges are considered 0.2gr. above setting.I feel the reason for overcharges is the large diameter of the drop tube allowing too many grains to fall at once. The instruction sheet is very basic and easy to follow and the price is very easy to live with. Very nice unit.
Best of the Auto Charge(21.10.2011)
I have recently purchased this maching to replace my PACT Auto Charge machine. The Hornady unit stands head and shoulders over the PACT for ease of use and speed. One area of note is removal of powder after your reloading is finished. Works great with all powders, but finial trickle is somewhat slow with flaked powder such as Blue Dot and Unique.
works with stick powders(04.12.2011)
The price is right. Works great with H4350
Poor dispenser(14.04.2012)
I purchased one of these approx. a week ago from another retailer. When I got it home I unpacked it and plugged it in to warm up per instructions. After warm up I threw a few charges of IMR 4350. It seemed to throw them to the specified weight. I turned it off and came back about an hour later to reload some 7mm Rem Mag's. After letting it warm up per instructions I started throwing charges. It would constantly overcharge. I set the "slow" setting up to delay trickling. First at the low setting, however, it would still invariably throw overcharge weights. I increased the point at which it would start trickling however it would still throw overcharges. It became so slow at throwing charges I could throw charges from my manual powder dispenser faster. I returned it. I thought since it was a "Hornady" it would be better than this. Guess I was wrong. I've been reloading for 16 years and I am picky about accuracy when throwing loads, particularly when reaching max load.
Poor Performance(10.07.2013)
Initial use seemed OK but after first use, the unit would only throw overweight - every throw (ADI 2208 Powder). Even on slow, only 75% not thrown overweight (and I am talking up to 0.5 gn overweight)
When it does throw 'on weight' (and 0.1 gn overweight always ticks back to 'on weight') the actual load measures anything up to 1 gn off the actual weight displayed (I have used 3 other scales, including the Sartorious +/- 0.02gn scale to check these weights)
Interestingly, when it does start throwing correct weight, the thrown weight is usually spot on +/- 0.02gn. It's just not reliable.
Not Good(21.08.2013)
Initially the unit was working fine. After a few months of light use (some rifle and pistol cartrige loading) the keypad malfuntioned. first the 3 would not register, then the 9 quit working when entering the charge. I suppose we get what we pay for.
Second look(14.09.2013)
After finding the tweaks sheet (you have to download it from Hornady), it is possible to tweak the settings for when to start trickle and how fast to trickle that now makes throwing on weight actually reliable at all speeds (with lareg kernal type powder like AR2208). One of the tweaks has to be set each and every time you use the machine - but it is reliable now though I would suggest it is more like +/- 0.2gn not +/- 0.1gn but if you re-weigh then you can toss the odd high load since most or within 0.1gn or better.
Works good when new(21.06.2014)
I've been through two digital powder dispensers now and it has been the same story each time. When brand new they are great. After awhile though, they can't be trusted. The Hornady now will not throw a powder charge within .5 Grains of the desired setting. I have to set it a full Grain under and then trickle it to finish. And I re-weigh each charge in a balance beam scale just to be sure as the digital displays will lie to you in my experience. When you complain, they start telling you that you can't have a fluorescent light close by (in a WORKSHOP??) nor have your cell phone in your pocket. Well, for low-volume reloading this isn't really a big deal and it does confirm that I get the same charge in each case. I've just found that digital powder measures cannot be trusted. Your experience may vary.
Could be a lot better(04.04.2016)
For what I paid for it, it is not bad. I have used the RCBS chargemaster which I believe is better but then it is also more expensive.
Takes a while to adjust to the correct trickle speed for what powder you are using otherwise it will overthrow the powder target weight. Even when it is dialed in it will still over throw every 10th charge.
Good for what I paid for it but think if I was to do it again I would fork out the extra cash and go RCBS.
Piece of junk(18.10.2017)
Had one for 4 days, couldn't get to drop proper amt of powder. Maybe one correct drop in 20 tries, over charged most of the time.. Must faster to load with my old Lyman #55 powder measure and powder scale.
