Good quality part(14.03.2010)
This barrel nut is mil-spec and has a nice fit and finish.
Quality product(19.04.2011)
It's a barrel nut. Simple, but easy to install and no fitting issues.
Good unit(12.01.2012)
I'm not sure why another reviewer states it works and fit well yet only gave it 3 stars. It's a barrel nut. If it fits and works then it's received it's 5 star rating IMO. It held torque well, lined up perfectly at 40 ft lbs, and the threads were clean.
Do not buy(23.04.2012)
The brand name should be "Low Standard" as it's teeth stripped at 50 ft/lbs and did not line up at all between 30 & 80 ft/lbs.
Not worth purchasing!(04.05.2012)
Skip this product and move on. I found that I also had issues with it not lining up correctly and then the teeth stripped off in the same way that "10 time AR builder" described.
Torque wrench was set to only 32 ft/lbs, there was no reason for the product to fail and yet it did. If you want a quality product you need to look elsewhere than "High Standard".
Excellent barrel nut !(06.09.2012)
Ordered this nut due to the colt being out of stock. No regrets. Works fine. Don't know what the fuss is about, unless the other users were not using the proper tool, or using it correctly. Torqued this nut to the max on a heavy match barrel. Fit and function perfect.
I have used several with no problems(17.12.2012)
I have used three of these to repair and/or build weapons. Used quality tools and had no problems.
Looks&Functions(10.03.2013)
I have to do routine maintenance on M4/M16 for my work when I decided to do a build. I bought this for my first personal AR build. It look good on my first inspection and the u-notches lined up for the gas tube perfectly when hand tighten. My problem started when torque to specs (30-32ft.lbs.). At that point the gas notches were not lined up. It is never recommended to back off torque at this point. When pressured (a.k.a appling more torque) to turn for notches to get in lined is when the tips began breaking. On my next build I will have to keep a better eye on the line up when I apply the torque. It a matter of paying attention.
Teeth broke at 32 ft lbs(13.03.2013)
I recently ordered this barrel nut since it was in stock at the time. I had a nice new tool and held it in place while attempting to torque the nut to 32 ft/lbs. Teeth on the barrel nut chipped and broke each time. The metal used was obviously substandard. Don't ignore the other negative reviews on this nut like I did.
Total Junk(08.04.2013)
The only thing I liked about this part, was finally being able to get it off. Just like the others said, the teeth bent out of shape and wouldn't hold the wrench anymore. It toook some serious/slow/careful Dremel time to reshape them enough to try again and again and again to get it off. I was scared I was going to have to scrap the whole upper build because of it. I couldn't even Jerry rig the hand guard on without it not working properly. Wait and spend the money on a more reliable manufacturer.
Will NOT fit on bull barrel(01.07.2013)
I bought this to fit on a DPMS mini SASS barrel which is a bull barrel that is not contoured. After reading the F&Qs it stated that it would fit on a bull barrel. Upon recieving in in 3 days thanks to brownells I tried putting it on and it would not fit over the barrel at all so be cautious of your barrels you are trying to use this for. I gave it three stars cause athough the part is made well and is good quality, but it would not do what it was advertised to do.
It's a barrel nut(25.10.2013)
Used a Precision Reflex wrench with this barrel nut to install a .300 AAC Blackout barrel on an AR-15 upper. Once de-greased, the finish appeared thin in spots. I set my torque wrench at 40 f/lbs and increased torque incrementally by 4 f/lbs until the gas tube gap lined up at 52 f/lbs. I didn't experience any problems with the teeth shearing or bending as noted by others.
Disappointed(18.11.2013)
I bought this along with the AP Custom Carbon Fiber Free Float Tube (Great product). I was installing this barrel nut onto the receiver and was at 25ftlbs but the notch was not lined up with the gas tube hole. I had to tighten it to get the notch and hole lined up and as I torqued it to 45-50 lbs one of the teeth broke off the nut. While 50lbs is a little on the high side, I would not expect the barrel nut to break. I used other notches to get the nut lined up and installed the tube. One broken tooth will not affect the rifle and the AP tube is great.
Good Quality, Works Fine(10.01.2014)
Others have reported problems with the teeth breaking, but I have not had that problem. I used a good quality wrench and torqued to over 70 foot lbs without issue. Finish isn't the best I've seen but good enough for the job it performs. Used with a Troy Alpha rail and while it was snug getting the rail over the teeth, final fit is good.
50/50(10.01.2014)
I bought two of these for two builds, it was the only barrel nut Brownells had in stock. The first one needed to go to 45 ft lbs to line up and yes my tool took off teeth at that torque, not good. the second torqued at 32 ft lbs with no issue. Dissapointed in a USA made part that won't take the torque.
Good product(27.01.2014)
I have installed several barrels with these nuts with no problems at all. Use a good quality wrench and don't "side load" it.
barrel nut is FINE(25.02.2014)
Despite the negative reviews I purchased this barrel nut to complete a build. I found it necessary to tighten, then loosen several times before making the final torque adjustment. This is something that should be done anyway to properly seat and align the barrel extension with the upper receiver. I have since used two more High Standard barrel nuts and they have been 100% after several thousand rounds.
Not to spec(29.04.2014)
Bought to mount a VTAC Troy Alpha rail and the barrel nut was out of spec - couldn't get the rail to work with this product. Ended up with a Bravo Company barrel nut
Low quality but they do work(13.10.2014)
I've used several of these and they are made of VERY soft metal. The teeth round over very easily and it makes installing rails like the troy alpha almost impossible without grinding the rounded edges with a dremmel. If youre going to use a standard handguard set this should be fine, but otherwise stay away.
Works well(07.12.2015)
Item works well. For those of you who had tabs break off - did you apply grease to the threads? A good quality grease like Aeroshell 22 needs to be applied to the threads of the upper receiver and the barrel nut before torqueing. Torque, back off, and re-torque three times using a quality armorer's wrench.
