wish i had known about this years ago!!1(22.11.2009)
I have small hands and short fingers. always had trouble working a standard extended safety . This safety has changed the way i look at 1911 pistols! what a HUGE difference!!! my 1911 actually fits my hand now. took very little fitting . just had to add a couple of detent marks and then polish with 2000 grit wet paper to make it really shine!!
Perfect!(03.03.2010)
I have a some what limited reach with my thumb and reaching the standard safety was a pain. I would have to change my grip to flip off the safety plus I like to ride it and that was a bit akward. This one solved all my problems. You have to do a bit of finish work but it is well worth the effort. Nothing like a comfortable and proper grip.
Just the thing for small hands(17.07.2010)
Allows me to grip with both thumbs pointed forward in line with the barrel. Has improved my follow up shots, much easier to double tap. Minor fitting, used a brush with a demmel tool to polish to bright finish.
Just what I needed(18.09.2010)
I have installed 2 of these on my Kimber CDP's. Great modification for people with smaller hands. Needs minor fitting, but easily accomplished with a Dremel tool. Just wish this came in ambidextrous.
Great safety(06.07.2011)
Brought this to my gunsmith and he installed it quickly. I've got smallish hands, and it makes a huge difference. Very comfortable and smooth. I still need to trim the rubber grip a bit at the top corner under the safety, but a very nice product, top quality.
Great safety for lowering thumbs!!(18.01.2012)
This safety fits the bill for riding thumb over thumb. I have experimented with so many grips and safeties and found this is the one. Thumbs parallel and pointing same direction as trigger finger. I dressed up the serrations. I would prefer a bit of refinement on the overall finish as it is a cast piece. Regardless though it performs.
A useful adaptive part(06.06.2014)
As others said, this is good part to use as a tool for shooters with small fingers. It needed metal removed to clear Springfield GM wood stocks, It is fugly as cast and will take some time to fit and look presentable.
Quaility is terrible(29.07.2014)
Poor quality part. Safety broke off at the pin in a match. Poor MIM parts. In 30 years of shooting never had a safety break off in my hand. Stay away until they beef up the quality.
I like it(08.10.2017)
The reviews saying it'll require cleaning up the surface are correct. I also needed to polish the back of the body to even it out. The safety lug itself needed just a little polishing to fit it properly to my pistol.
I've not had time to do a lot of shooting with it yet, but what I have done makes me glad I installed it. I do have to shoot with my thumb on the shelf, because if I place it under it bumps the safety up to the 'on' position; since that's the way I started shooting 1911s, not a problem for me. Also, the thumb shelf does clear a Crimson Trace laser grip with room to spare.
Hate to say it...(14.06.2018)
Having had 3 installed now, I have to admit this product is not top quality. With Gunsite's and Brownell's reputation you would think that these would be on par with the high quality of Wilson or Ed Brown. Not even close. My most recent Low Mount safety was visibly crooked. My gunsmith said the contact surface is minimal and under spec. It worked but just barely.
The concept is perfect. Compared to Wilson's low mount, the angle of the ledge is much better. But the quality of the steel is poor and the casting is way off...
It works for me(12.07.2009)
I have been shooting and carrying 1911s for many years, but due to my short fingers I have never been able to use a thumb over the safety hold while shooting. All of my 1911s are equipped with short triggers and flat mainspring housings. I tried the Gun Site lo mount safety and it is perfect for me. As soon as I draw my gun my thumb is on top of the safety and stays there while I am shooting. This has increased my first shot speed tremendously with one or two hand shooting. I have heard shooters with average size hands don't care for this safety, but so far it works great for me.
Where has this item been all my life?(22.09.2009)
I have been a 1911 guy for years. I use the over safety high grip when I shoot. Occasionally I have a malfunction because I am not getting the grip safety fully depressed. I have medium sized hands. I was about to sell my Colt gunsite model 1911 because I was having that problem constantly. I installed the gunsite low mount safety. It only took a couple of strokes of a file to fit it. Life is now good and I don't plan on selling this gun. Such a simple solution and from the same company that this 1911 is named for. Ironic.

Great for small hands(18.12.2009)
I have this on all of my 1911's . I have small hands and shoot with a high thumb grip. If it wasn't for thes safety I wouldn't be able to carry a 1911. From Colt to Les Baer, they all wear a Gunsight thumb safety. Great product for those of us with small hands
Gunsite 1911 Low Mount Thumb Safety Blue(24.12.2009)
The 1911 platform is one of my favorite handguns to shoot and is my primary weapon of choice for work. I have very large hands and always had a problem with getting "bit" by the slide unexpectedly, even with the beaver tail grip safety. If one shoots the 1911 properly with the thumb of your shooting hand on top of the safety this makes it even easier to get flesh caught in the slide. I installed this safety on my Wilson CQB and haven't had a problem since. It is about as perfect as one could wish. It was also easy to install; mine ended up being basically "drop in." This safety will be standard equipment on all my 1911s.
Great idea, poor exicution(06.03.2010)
Great idea for smaller hands, will get in the way of a proper grip if you have large hands. I gave this a try to get around having to purchase a higher quality safety and modifying it by welding up a new lower lever. While it does work, the quality of the casting is poor, with the pin being undersized, and the safety is lug thin and irregular. The installed part is not tight and results in a poor overall fit. I removed the part and welded up a qualilty safety.
Great product except.......(16.11.2010)
This is a great part for me because it fits my hand perfectly. The down side that I recently discovered is that if I am doing weak hand shooting I often trip the safety into the on position while firing. I am not sure I would want this part on a carry gun because of this.
It fell out(26.06.2011)
installed the safety. fliped it up and down felt very good. I then shock the gun and the safety fell out. Pin is thin. put the old safety back in.
Not quite what it seems.(21.05.2012)
This is definitely not a drop in part. Needs a good gunsmith to install properly. The manufacturer does not cut a detent in it. That is the installers job. Unless you are real good or real careful, damage will be done. There is not enough metal for it to be forgiving.
Great Product(25.05.2012)
I have large hands and ALWAYS get bit when holding my thumb high on the safety. After installing this on my Wilson CQB I've never had that problem again. This is a GREAT product. My only gripes are that it isn't made of thicker material like the custom parts I'm used to. Most importantly, I wish they made one ambidextrous. With this safety there is great tendency to inadvertently engage the safety when shooting support hand only. With an ambidextrous safety this wouldn't happen since the thumb of your shooting hand would rest on the safety. I WOULD buy this product again and again, and have already done so. I just want to see somebody come out with an ambidextrous one now. I've already contacted some custom shops, urging them to do so.
Great addition-if you're handy...(19.01.2014)
Added this to my RIA 1911. I am very pleased with the result AFTER I got through the fitting and install. The part I received had a raised ridge on top of the safety that prevented the part from fully going into the SAFE position notch in the slide. A dremel and polish/reblue took care of that. The finish is rather grainy so I polished the entire part to make it look good on the gun. Fitting the sear engagement was quick and easy, no problems there. The low mount makes it possible for me to use a thumb-over-safety grip-- I could not do that with the standard thumb safety. I would buy this part again, just be aware that quality control from the manufacturer could be an issue.
Pretty good, but...(13.12.2014)
This part dropped right in to my PT-1911. No fitting required. It conforms to my style of grip perfectly. I would rather that the front area were built up a little. As it is, the plunger is only fully contacted when in the OFF safe position. When the safety is ON only about 1/3 to 1/2 of the plunger is contacted. If this becomes a problem, a little brazing or TIG welding a tiny spot might be in order.
A Godsend(21.12.2015)
Due to hand surgery I am no longer able to raise me thumb high enough to engage/disengage the standard thumb safety on my 1911. Thanks to this product I am able to reach the safety with no problem.
I did not attempt to install myself but had my gunsmith install it for me. No problems were mentioned
Nice concept but.....(30.01.2016)
Decided to try this finally on a new build (5" Nork), probably more so by homage to Gunsite & the late, legendary COL Jeff Cooper. Turns out to be a very nice idea, decent part at that, and no real issues fitting. But then again.......you better consider the need to change grip panels from regular to slender. Otherwise, you just might wind up having to perform a major trim job to the left side panel just to get clearance for it to disengage. This made me a little crazy for a while, but at least temporarily solved it with a pair of Ergo grips. If you run into this, a pair of slender VZ frags might just be the ticket, or any other VZ you might like. MAGPUL grips would probably work like the Ergo if you don't want to change bushings. Surprised that I haven't seen this mentioned before in other reviews!
I like this safety but. ........(22.02.2016)
First, full disclosure. I bought this safety to put on a Series 70 Combat Commander that I had installed a Chip McCormick Ultra High Grip grip safety on. That safety requires quite a bit of re-shaping of the upper part of the frame. So, when I first installed this extended thumb safety, there was at least 3/64" of material that stuck out past the frame when it was in the disengaged position. The better part of an afternoon with a die grinder and an assortment of die sinker's rifflers took care of that problem. I also added a detent for the disengaged position and reshaped the back edge of the thumb lever so that it would clear the grip panel. Now, in spite of all of the extra work, I really like the end result. The thumb position is really comfortable and the safety is easy to manipulate. The part is obviously a casting and I can't give it the highest marks for fit and finish but it does what I was trying to achieve and I liked it well enough to get 3 more for the rest of my Colts. So yes, I would recommend it with the understanding that it is not a drop in part.
